DailyPuppy.com launches iPhone app
Demand Media's DailyPuppy.com has released an application for Apple's iPhone that delivers dog lovers puppy images and information daily.
The Daily Puppy application features a new puppy every day, complete with their biographies and additional images. The application lets users add favorite puppies to their library, as well as share puppies with friends and family via email and Facebook.
"Every day Demand Media, parent company of DailyPuppy.com, makes it possible for people to engage others around interests that they have a shared passion for that become these specialized niche online communities and DailyPuppy.com is no different," said Courtney Montpas, general manager of DailyPuppy.com, Santa Monica, CA.
"The Daily Puppy application for the iPhone and iPod Touch is the gateway to the unique Web site -- two of the main attractions of the site that have garnered a large community of loyal puppy-loving enthusiasts who come to DailyPuppy.com on a daily basis are the ?Puppy of the Day' and the ?Grown-up Puppy of the Day,'" she said.
"We wanted to enable these passionate users to take DailyPuppy.com with them where ever they are, so that even when they're away from their computers, they're still able to get their daily puppy fix."
The target demographic for the Daily Puppy Web site and the application is anyone who loves puppies and dogs.
"We have received feedback from our community that everyone from a 2-year-old child to their 60 year old grandmother loves the application, which gives us a broad appeal in terms of all of the many iPhone applications," Ms. Montpas. "We believe this is an application for all ages." .
The new tool allows puppy lovers to access a complete library of breeds ranging from Basset Hounds to Labradors to Terriers.
Users can also post pictures of their own puppies, browse by past featured pups and shake the device to view a new random puppy.
The Daily Puppy application is available for download in the Apple App Store.
The Daily Puppy Application lets dog lovers access articles on everything from how to train their puppy to how to treat tapeworms.
Regular articles include content uploaded by eHow.com's dog editor as well as contributions from various dog owners.
Additionally, users can view instructional puppy videos on house breaking, training and grooming, or participate in forum discussions with other dog owners.
Demand Media's current plan is to monetize the Daily Puppy application through pay-per-download only, but in the future may entertain additional ad support.
"BecauseDailyPuppiy.com is committed to the humane treatment of animals, we knew that a key component of launching the application was the idea of giving back and supporting our non-profit partners," Ms. Montpas said. "Not only was it a way of supporting the organizations who are making a difference, but it was also another way to differentiate ourselves from the many iPhone applications that are available.
"By combining a great product with a great cause, we were hopeful that the DailyPuppy.com community, would help us market the application virally by word-of-mouth due to their overall enjoyment of the application and to help raise money for a cause that we're all passionate about," she said.
Demand Media currently promotes the application on DailyPuppy.com, via its Twitter account and through word of mouth.
"At Demand Media, we strongly believe in the power of the community, which is engrained and resonates at the core of who we are and how we develop Web sites," Ms. Montpas said. "We feel that the communities, like that of DailyPuppy.com, are the soul of the site that not only has the power to transform lives but they also drive new product innovations.
"Based on the number of downloads so far and the number of people buzzing about it, we know that puppy power will prevail and that the Daily Puppy application will be one of Demand Media's most successful iPhone applications to date," she said.
