The New Yorker uses mobile app as tour guide

The New Yorker has rolled out a mobile app that serves as a guide to New York culture from the magazine?s staff.

The Goings On app is available for Apple and Android mobile devices. The app is also available for free download in Apple?s App Store and Google?s Android Market.

The New Yorker offers a signature mix of reporting and commentary on politics, international affairs and the arts, along with fiction, poetry, humor, and cartoons.

Mobile magazine
Goings On is a daily, digital version of the publication?s Goings On About Town section.

The section comprises listings and capsule reviews of movies, art, night life, music, dance, theatre, readings and talks and restaurants.

Readers can filter events by date and location and use the interactive maps to show event and restaurant locations.

Additionally, stars are used to highlight events that the Goings On staff thinks are noteworthy.

Via the app, readers can also view listings and recommendations that can be saved in their favorites file or shared via email, Facebook, Twitter and foursquare.

Audio tours
The app, which is supported by MasterCard, includes four audio tours.

Readers can walk with Calvin Trillin to his favorite restaurants in and around Chinatown, accompany Peter Schjeldahl through the Frick Collection, take a vintage shopping trip with Patricia Marx and tour the High Line with Paul Goldberger.

In addition, the app offers daily real-time event updates and cultural news are provided by the editors of Goings On About Town via a Twitter feed to the app.
