Examiner.com eyes mobile with new site

Examiner.com has cornered mobile in its quest for broader reach, implementing a new mobile Web site to highlight its national content.

Examiner.com is partnering with Verve Wireless to power its mobile initiative, in which the mobile site will serve 90 markets across the United States featuring recent articles from Examiner. There are over 11,500 Examiners to date which cover thousands of subjects daily.

"Recent reports indicate that consumers spend as much as one-seventh of all their media consumption time in mobile," said Rick Blair, interim CEO of Examiner.com, Denver, CO. "The mobile Web platform in the U.S. is in a period of hyper growth, with numbers climbing from two to three percent last November to at least 10 percent each month.

"With this tremendous growth comes the challenge to make that experience relevant and useful," he said. "Examiner.com will reach more readers and provide relevant information when and how they want it. We expect to attract more users who use mobile platforms to get their information."

Examiner.com was launched in April of 2008 to serve the public with local information provided by Examiners, or knowledgeable local influencers.

The publication is based in Denver, CO, and lets local citizens share their local know-how on a blog-like platform in over 60 U.S. cities.

Examiner.com is owned by Clarity Media Group.

Verve Wireless is lending the Examiner its ad partners such as Nokia Interactive, Millennial Media, Quattro Wireless and Ad Infuse, as a result of this new partnership.

Examiner claims that as the mobile site has just launched, it is now in discussion over which brands will deploy ads on the site.

"Everyone in our industry knows that consumers want their content anywhere and anytime, making the potential of the mobile platform limitless," Mr. Blair said.

"Examiner.com sees mobile as a means to reach more people, wherever they are, with relevant information, whenever they need it," he said.

Examiner.com chose Verve Wireless as its publishing partner for its extensive experience in the field.

The mobile site home page gives the user the choice of four regions in the United States, Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific, in order to find the appropriate examiner for the user's location.

Along with the weather and panels for Home, Search, Categories and Settings the user is linked directly to their city.

Then the user is given the top three stories from each of the following sections: most popular, arts and entertainment, sports, news, gadgets and tech, business and finance, events, restaurants, neighborhoods and culture, games and hobbies, with 17 alternative category choices to follow.

When the user chooses a particular category, they can scroll through all stories in that category to click, open and read.

Verve Wireless has worked with hundreds of daily newspapers, alternative newsweeklies, city magazines and broadcasters to deliver news, entertainment guides, event listings and community calendars.

Verve claims that the immediacy and convenience of mobile is not only changing the way that the public consumes media, but has opened up the door to a whole new channel for marketers to reach their audience.

Examiner.com is almost up to 15,000 Examiners, a number that goes up daily. Each of the Examiners are carefully maintained and provided with access to publishing tools, Web training and a live help desk.

Examiner.com is currently recruiting Examiners in each of its markets.

"Ten years ago, who knew that people would be able to get directions, watch movies, listen to music or send messages with their phones," Mr. Blair said.

"Studies show that today, iPhone owners are 55 percent more likely to use their phones to get news and information than they are newspapers or print publications," he said. "So, I would say that the future is as unlimited as the applications being created and updated for mobile."
