Time Out New York Kids enhances magazine experience with augmented reality

Time Out New York Kids has enhanced its August cover with mobile augmented reality, letting users unlock video and 3D content via their mobile device.

The magazine teamed up with junaio for the augmented reality issue, which features the P.S. 22 chorus. Readers can download the junaio application from Apple?s App Store or Android Market.

?Our August  cover of Time Out New York Kids, which focuses on where to go and what do with your kids in the city, was featuring the Webby-award winning P.S. 22 chorus, a great elementary school group from Staten Island,? said Marci Weisler, digital business director of Time Out North America, New York. ?Their videos speak for themselves so it was a great way to bring the cover to life.?

Time Out New York Kids is go-to guide for active parents on where to go and what to do with their family in the city.

Junaio is an augmented reality browser for camera equipped smartphones or other mobile devices presenting users with interactive web-based information and experiences wherever they are.

Once the application is downloaded, users can hold their smartphones up to the cover and a video of the chorus performing ?One Day? by artist Matisyahu will play.

?The first time we did this ? an augmented reality issue ? was with Time Out New York and it was focused on geo-location,? Ms. Weisler said. ?This time we rolled out with Time Out New York Kids, and focused on video.

?Our target demographic is New York City parents who are out and about, and who map with the smartphone demographic,? she said.

Past endeavors
Last month, the publication incorporated mobile augmented reality in its ?Summer Drinking? special issue.

Readers can use their handset, select the TONY Summer Drinking channel and point their handset in all directions to reveal details on bars that are featured in the magazine (see story).

TONY is looking to integrate augmented reality in future issues.

?We are getting the word out within the magazine, timeoutkids.com and via our e-newsletters, Twitter and Facebook,? Ms. Weisler said. ?Additionally, we?re focused on press outreach.

?We will definitely continue to explore the possibilities of augmented reality and other new technologies,? she said.
