U.S. Open taps IBM for mobile WAP

USOpen.org, a Web site dedicated to the U.S. Open, an annual tennis event, has gone mobile.
USOpen.org delivers a personalized online experience for each tennis fan.

The site, newly redesigned for 2008, offers coverage of the tournament such as live scoring, featured matches of the day, player interviews and hourly live broadcast that provide the tournament's latest news and notes. The mobile site is customizable and has exclusive content.

"We are always looking for new and inventive ways to bring the sport of tennis closer to fans," said Phil Green, director of advanced media and the United States Tennis Association, New York.

"By utilizing the Internet and cutting-edge technology, we're able to offer fans a myriad of new and exciting ways to enhance their U.S. Open experience," he said.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level.

IBM is the U.S. Open's technology partner.

IBM is an information technology, business and technology services, consulting services, IT research and IT financing organization.

IBM built the official U.S. Open Web site. IBM is also responsible for the new broadband, interactive and mobile features, all created to provide fans with a fresh and unique perspective, both on and off the court.

"It's amazing to see how the Internet continues to evolve on a daily basis," said Rick Singer, Director of Worldwide Sponsorship Marketing for IBM. "Given that evolution, our challenge is always to stay ahead of the changing needs of US Open fans around the world. We think this year's website does just that by introducing new ways for fans to interact with the tournament wherever they are."

IBM, the USTA's exclusive information technology solution provider, developed and hosts the site.

USOpen.org generated an all-time record 30 million visits during last year's US Open, which represents a 17 percent increase from the record visits in 2006.

Mobile content will include a dedicated WAP site and options for nearly 50 different types of alerts.

Fans can visit http://www.usopen.org/en_US/interactive/sms/index.html?promo=topnav to register their mobile numbers for SMS alerts around the event.

Or, fans can text the key word UPDATES to short code 45748.

Fans can also send an SMS with the keyword WIN to 45748 for a chance to win a trip to the 2009 U.S. Open.

SMS entries must be received by 11:59:59 p.m. EDT on Sept. 7.

The winner will be selected in a random drawing from all eligible entries received on or about Sept. 15.

One grand prize will be awarded consisting of a trip for two to the 2009 US Open Tennis Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The trip consists of round-trip coach air transportation for the winner and one guest from the major commercial airport nearest to the winner's residence to New York , a 3 day/2 night hotel accommodation and any ground transportation between the New York airport and the hotel.

"A lot of our fans are on the go and we wanted to make sure that they have the option of consuming our content whether they are in front of a PC or on-the-go," Mr. Green said.

"The WAP site is optimized for mobile and automatically detects the user's devie and formats to fit their screen," he said. "we chose the most popular online elements and brought them to mobile."
