Fandango offers mobile voice-activated movie information

Movie search service Fandango has teamed up with Tellme, a Microsoft subsidiary, to create a voice-activated movie information tool for mobile phones.

Consumers just hold down the 'talk' button, say a movie title or local theater name and see show times, buy tickets and get driving directions to the theater. The service uses GPS technology to deliver local information and is initially available on BlackBerry phones and will soon be available on Helio Mysto phones.

"Tellme is focused on having people say what they want and get it and now we are trying to focus on cases when people need to speak, like when you are driving or walking and can't enter keywords," said David Mitby, senior program manager at Tellme. "The service furthers our goal of ubiquitous consumer access."

Moviegoers will be able to obtain a similar service for their GPS-enabled cars, eliminating the need for typing searches in vehicles. The new service will give consumers the information, directions and communication capabilities they need fast.

"Tellme is all about voice and we think it's the right interface for mobile as it's hard to interact and type while on-the-go," Mr. Mitby said. "In fact, I think voice is reaching reaching a point where it will be the key mobile search interface."

Fandango is one of the Web's top movie and entertainment destinations. The site sells tickets to more than 15,000 screens. Fandango also runs reviews, commentary and trailers, and offers the ability to select a film, plan where and when to see it, and buy tickets in advance.

Fandango is available at http://www.fandango.com, 1-800-FANDANGO and on the mobile device at mobile.fandango.com.

"We think mobile phones have a user challenge," Mr. Mitby said. "Scrolling, typing, searching and clicking is unnecessary and tough unless you give it your undivided attention. We are trying to give people a better experience on a mobile device."
