Helio allows YouTube desktop features on mobile

Mobile virtual network operator Helio has rolled out a YouTube page to offer mobile users access to community and personalization features on the video-sharing community site.

YouTube availability has been limited on most mobile services since users can't "log in" and, as a result, cannot rate and access personal videos while on-the-go. Now, desktop features are being brought onto the mobile phone.

"Helio is taking mobile YouTube beyond anything else on the market, letting members view tens of millions of videos but also giving them true community interaction comparable to the Web and even beyond the Web," said Sky Dayton, CEO of Helio.

Helio's mobile YouTube page is available for Helio Ocean mobile phone users at no additional charge. The network operator is one of the few besides Apple to receive a customized YouTube client.

The YouTube mobile site is running over Helio's nationwide high-speed 3G network.

The application integrates video capture and upload for near real-time sharing of experiences, GPS tagging of videos, personalization and access to community features such as rating and commenting on videos.

Helio members can browse and upload previously saved videos or record videos in the application and upload them directly to YouTube.

Uploaded videos can be given a title, description, tags and category and be set to public or private.

Helio allows members to also geo-tag video uploads from their mobile device. Using Ocean's built-in GPS capabilities, members can send GPS coordinates with their video to track where they were when the video was shot.

Mr. Dayton claimed this is the closest thing to the YouTube Web experience available on mobile today.

Helio's YouTube application also offers members access to their own video feeds including My Subscriptions, My Favorites, My Playlists, My Videos and Received Videos.

Members can also check out YouTube videos in traditional categories such as Most Viewed, Most Recent, Top Rated and Recently Featured.

"This application offers people even more customization and provides them with instant access to interact with the YouTube community whenever and wherever," Mr. Dayton said.
