LinkedIn goes mobile

LinkedIn, the world's leading professional online network, has gone mobile.

The business social network has created a beta Web application for mobile Web-enabled phones, targeting busy executives on-the-go. Members will be able to connect to their contacts, browse profiles and send LinkedIn requests from their mobile device by visiting m.linkedin.com.

"The reality is that professionals all have a wireless device and most of them are Web-enabled," said Jane Corrigan, spokeswoman for LinkedIn, Mountain View, CA. "Letting professionals who are either attending conferences, sales meetings or client events is a response to the fact that people aren't just sitting at their desks anymore."

Launched in 2002, LinkedIn has more than 19 million professionals with active accounts. It claims to add an average of 1 million new subscribers each month.

Via the mobile application, LinkedIn members will be able search LinkedIn profiles including photos and bio information. Also, members will be able to research the contacts and send invitations. They can sign up for reminder alerts to receive important updates about connections.

LinkedIn members can access the mobile site on mobile devices with Web browsers such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod touch and Research In Motion's BlackBerry.

The LinkedIn mobile application is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin, with additional languages to follow.

A final version of the LinkedIn mobile application will debut in the spring.

"Linked is growing rapidly and even before we thought of going mobile, we saw that at least 100,000 people a month were trying to access the site from their mobile phones," Ms. Corrigan said. "We are offering some of the features [of LinkedIn.com] on the mobile site for all our professionals on-the-go."
