NYC Media, Howcast use QR codes to promote recycling

NYC Media partnered with Howcast to feature QR codes on the sides of sanitation trucks to educate New Yorkers about city services and initiatives.

Users can scan the QR codes that take them to a video from NYC Media?s show ?The Green Apple: Recycling.? The QR codes will also link to a ?How to Recycle? video, which was created by Howcast, that will appear in six to eight weeks.

?The strategy is for NYC Media to advance the City's messaging to educate New Yorkers wherever they are ? at home, online, on the go,? said Jason Liebman, cofounder and CEO of Howcast, New York.

?By using multiple distribution points and co-producing informative and engaging how-to videos with NYC-based Howcast for multiple platforms, NYC Media enables New Yorkers to instantly access information to understand the innovative online services and applications provided by City agencies,? he said.

NYC Media is the official TV, radio and online network of the City of New York, informing, educating and entertaining New Yorkers about the City?s diverse people and neighborhoods, government, services, attractions and activities.

Howcast provides instructional videos and plans to work with NYC Media to create custom content that will be available to users online, on television and on their mobile devices.

QR codes let smartphone users receive photos, messages, and links by scanning the displayed code with their handsets.

The QR codes can be found on both sides of 2,200 sanitation trucks. The program began on July 12.

?NYC Media will be getting the word out for this online via http://www.nyc.gov, on cable and on demand via NYC Life channel 25, through social media channels, and, of course, on the 2,200 sanitation trucks,? Mr. Liebman said.
