Norton announces mobile services to protect users

Symantec has introduced Norton Everywhere, a three-part initiative that features mobile and addresses some of today?s most common issues for smartphones, including device loss and data protection.

There are three new products that are being launched, including Norton Smartphone Security for Android Beta, Norton DNS Beta and Norton Connect Beta. Norton Smartphone Security beta for Android will be available in June.

?This initiative helps consumer electronics manufacturers solve a problem they haven?t had before,? said Dan Nadir, director of product management of consumer security products at Norton, Culver City, CA.

?Nowadays, a lot of things are becoming Internet connected,? he said ?These guys understand consumer electronics well but they don?t understand large device management or security and this can push out to tens of millions of devices over the Internet.?

Symantec?s Norton products protect consumers from cybercrime with technologies such as antivirus, anti-spyware and phishing protection.

Safety first
With the Norton Smartphone Security beta for Android, users can lock or wipe their device from prying eyes via text message in the event of device loss.

Symantec has also partnered with HTC MobilityNow and are currently testing on the Android platform.

The Norton Connect Beta application lets users access any files archived via Norton Online Backup or Norton 360 from their iPhone or Android device.

?The Android only Norton Smartphone Security gives users the ability to block any caller by number and prevents them from connecting with you by voice or text ? giving people the ability to get locations when data is offered at a different price,? Mr. Nadir said. ?A lot of people don?t realize that if they surf the Internet while roaming the rates will be higher ? there is still data usage even if you?re not actively using it and the app will tell you that you?re using data.

?The app also gives users the ability to remotely wipe the phone or lock the phone if they lose their phone or if there?s a chance it might get stolen,? he said. ?They can feel helpless, especially with all of their personal data.

?If they can?t get the phone back, people want to make sure their data is disabled. If you lose your phone you don?t have to go to a Web site, just borrow anyone?s phone, send a text message with command LOCK or WIPE and a password to lock it ? the wipe feature will delete all of the data.?

Additionally, the company has created a mobile site that lets users access the latest news, videos and downloads from Norton.

Consumers can access the mobile site if they go to http://www.m.norton.com.

The site is available in English, German and Japanese.

?Everyday that goes by, people are using more alternative Internet-connected devices,? Mr. Nadir said. ?And we want to continue to support these users and keep them safe.?
