There is no shortage of audience data in advertising. Marketers have access to signals from websites, devices, purchases, content consumption and countless other interactions. Every day, more information is collected, analyzed and added to an already complex picture of the people brands are trying to reach.
However, more data does not automatically create more understanding. Marketers have become very good at collecting audience data. The more challenging part is interpreting what that data is telling us.
A signal from a mobile device ID can tell you where someone was at any given time at any given place. A household can reveal valuable patterns and behaviours, on their own, however, these pieces of information only tell part of the story. The real value comes from understanding how they connect.
Data is the starting point, not the end result
For years, marketers have been racing to acquire and access more first-party data, much of it concentrated within walled gardens. Oftentimes, the challenge with this data has to remain within those ecosystems for targeting and measurement, limiting how easily it can be accessed across the broader ad tech stack, including other DSPs and technology providers. The result is an even bigger black box, making it difficult for marketers to see how their audiences perform across channels and understand what is driving effectiveness.
The next era will be defined by something different, it will be defined by interpretation. The most valuable audience data is not necessarily the largest dataset. It is the data that marketers can understand with confidence and use to make better decisions.
That means going beyond simply knowing that a signal exists and asking what it represents. For example: “Who is behind this interaction?” “Does this device belong to the same person as another device?” Without that context, even the most sophisticated data can remain a collection of disconnected signals.
The more you connect, the more you see
Consider a typical household. There may be multiple people, each with their own devices, interests and behaviours. Some interactions happen on shared devices or connected TVs, while others happen on personal phones and laptops.
From a data perspective, a marketer might see multiple devices, interactions and signals. Unless those signals can be understood in relation to one another, it is difficult to know what they actually represent.
This is where identity becomes increasingly important. The ability to connect data across interactions gives marketers a clearer complete view of their audience and a more precise understanding of the individual.
Not all connections are created equal
Not all audience data provides the same level of confidence. Some connections are inferred. Others are based on known relationships.
Deterministic identity connects audience data through known, verified identifiers: such as hashed emails, phone numbers, customer IDs or authenticated logins, rather than inferred behavioural patterns. Identity providers use these matches to connect records, devices and interactions to the same person or household within an identity graph, giving marketers greater confidence in who their audience signals belong to.
Yet, “deterministic” doesn’t always mean an audience is built entirely from verified connections. Some providers combine deterministic identifiers with modeled or inferred data while still using the deterministic label, making it difficult for marketers to know how much of an audience is truly grounded in verified identity. Marketers should look beyond the terminology to understand how identities are verified, connected and maintained, including whether matches are made at the individual or household level and how frequently the underlying data is refreshed.
How illumin is helping marketers see more clearly
At illumin, we believe audience intelligence should do more than give marketers access to data. It should help them make sense of it. illumin’s partnership with Audience Acuity does exactly that by bringing person-level identity into the platform, connecting validated name and address information with identifiers including email, phone, mobile advertising, CTV IDs and IP addresses. Instead of starting with a broad segment and assuming who sits behind it, marketers can access audiences grounded in verified people, enriched with intent and behavioral signals and refreshed daily.
Through its direct integration with Audience Acuity, illumin brings this audience intelligence into the platform, allowing marketers to move from identifying and understanding an audience to planning, activation, optimization and measurement without losing the identity foundation along the way. The integration delivers a 90% match rate within illumin, helping preserve audience precision as marketers move from understanding who they want to reach to actually reaching them.
This stronger foundation can give marketers greater context around the signals they already rely on, helping them make more informed decisions throughout the campaign, not simply about where to spend, but who they are trying to reach, why that audience matters and what happens after activation.
When marketers have a clearer understanding of who sits behind a signal, that intelligence can inform decisions across the entire campaign lifecycle. It can help shape audience planning, inform activation across channels and devices, provide greater clarity into who has actually been reached and support more meaningful optimization and measurement.
The future of audience intelligence isn’t more data. It’s greater certainty about who your audience is, what matters to them and how to reach them.
