Fox Interactive takes Photobucket mobile

Fox Interactive Media Inc.'s Photobucket, a Web site that offers image hosting, free photo sharing and video sharing, is debuting Photobucket Mobile to open its service to existing users and prospects.

This new Photobucket Mobile offering will let users access Photobucket features on Web-enabled mobile devices.

"Prior to this launch, Photobucket had enabled users to upload photos from a camera phone to its site, but Photobucket Mobile now brings full Photobucket features to users," said Alex Welch, president of Photobucket, Denver, CO.

Photobucket has been working on ways to let its users share photos beyond the desktop to integrate with their interests and hectic schedules. Recent integrations with digital recording service TiVo and wireless digital frame service eStarling are examples.

Photobucket is the largest photo and video sharing site, claiming 58 million users.

Findings from a survey conducted with Photobucket's users in August showed that 80 percent of users have a camera phone. Thirty-six percent use the camera in the mobile phone and 52 percent of users have access to the Internet from the handset.

"Clearly the mobile platform will meet this growing demand from Photobucket's user-base, which is largely youthful but spans mobile users of all ages," Mr. Welch said.

Photobucket Mobile is the latest in a series of recent mobile site launches from Fox Interactive.

In September, Fox Interactive launched the free, ad-supported mobile version of MySpace and announced plans to offer similar mobile versions of all of its sites -- including FoxSports.com on MSN, IGN Entertainment and others -- in the coming months.

"Future additions to Photobucket Mobile will include viewing, sharing and searching for video, embedding content on social networking sites from mobile devices and accessing linked tags on third-party sites," Mr. Welch said.

"Photobucket is also planning to work with wireless carriers to make Photobucket Mobile easy to use in combination with their respective offerings as carriers," he said.
