Playgirl penetrates mobile

Playgirl, the magazine for girls who just can not get enough hunk in their lives, has launched playgirlmobile.com, a mobile-optimized Web site.

Playgirlmobile.com features classic Playgirl content such as nude male photography, video and interactive content. But it gets better. The site also features services such as pay-per-download mobile video clips and live video chat.

?Mobile wasn't a viable platform for consumption of adult media in general until iPhone appeared, and now other 3G and 4G devices like Android, Palm and RIM are coming into the market collectively building enough penetration to make it an important segment,? said Lolly Popova, executive vice president at PureiPorn, San Diego, CA.

?Beyond the simple size metrics, what Apple demonstrated with the success of iTunes and the AppStore is that consumers have an under-served appetite for micropurchases,? she said.

?The clear pattern is that they would prefer to pay for high-quality content in small increments versus an all-you-can-eat subscription plan. It provides them more flexibility and control.?

Playgirl turned to mobile technology provider PureiPorn as a technology partner on the project.

Playgirlmobile.com uses QuickiClips, PureiPorn?s new 3G adult-video download service.

The online publisher claims that its readership has always been a trend-setting demographic and as such tends to lean on the cutting-edge side of mobile technology.

?Trust is key to the customer-brand relationship,? Ms. Popova said. ?Apple has proven that a user who trusts the platform will buy more, more frequently, and recommend their purchases to their social network.

?Certainly this is relevant to Playgirl's highly discriminating, tech-savvy market,? she said. ?They have these devices, they use these devices, they buy media from iTunes and the App Store.

?They want control and high quality and the QuickiClips platform for Playgirl provides that capability.?

Playgirlmobile.com offers users one-click pay-per-download purchasing rather than subscription-based purchasing and automatic rebilling, which are typical in the adult entertainment industry.

If a user chooses to buy a snackable bit of male nudity, the user can then stream the video on their 3G mobile device and sync the video via their PC.

Live video chat and phone-sex lines are also available on the mobile-optimized site so that users can chat one-on-one with sexy hunks whenever and wherever the mood strikes.

?Mobile is no longer a nice-to-have [option], it is a requirement for any relevant content producer,? Ms. Popova said. ?Users want to consume in many more contexts, untethered by a PC or laptop, and privately and discretely connected to the Internet. 

?Content on a user's phone is far more private than on a home or office desktop,? she said. ?Mobile is a much more intimate consumption channel. It is becoming the center of the audience's social network.

?Mobile also allows for far more casual interaction with the brand, giving a totally new and larger audience the chance to flirt with the Playgirl franchise.?
