The Weather Channel launches Android app

The Weather Channel Mobile has introduced an advanced mobile weather application for the Android platform.

Available through the Android Market on the T-Mobile G1 phone, the new application gives users the ability to view fully customized weather maps, detailed conditions and forecasts, local video and severe weather alerts.

"This product builds upon our deep knowledge and resource base, with features such as interactive maps, severe weather alerts and extensive customization options available on this new platform," said Louis Gump, vice president of mobile for The Weather Channel Interactive, Atlanta, GA.

"As a result, this product will again change the way consumers interact with weather information, from Concourse A at the airport to bleachers at the local softball field," he said.

Weather information can be viewed for neighborhood landmarks such as schools, parks and lakes to assist with daily activity planning.

In addition, location-enabled severe weather alerts let users know when dangerous weather threatens their area.

Through the "find me" function within The Weather Channel for Android application, users can get weather forecasts for their pinpointed location. Users can also search by city, ZIP code, street address and landmark.

Multiple areas can be saved and nicknamed for quick reference.

For example, consumers can find the forecast at home, keep up with airport conditions for a traveling spouse and check in with a parent's forecast in California -- all from one customized screen.

The Weather Channel for Android is an effective use of the many capabilities of the Android platform and offers ease-of-use.

The application includes interactive maps that are fully customizable and feature the functionality of Google Maps.

Users can decide to display layers such as radar, clouds, UV index, rainfall and snowfall.

Location-based video forecasts with The Weather Channel on-air talent include conditions and forecasts for your current location or other U.S. locations.

The new Android application features patented technology from The Weather Channel provides detailed weather conditions accurate up to 2 kilometers to provide users with the current conditions specific to their exact location -- not just the city or region.

Android is a complete, open mobile phone software stack.

It includes everything a manufacturer or carrier needs to build a mobile phone application.

Android was designed from the ground up to enable the best user experience possible on a mobile phone. It leverages Web and Internet content to provide advanced services such as mobile mash-ups and location-based applications, like The Weather Channel's, for example.

By creating a complete platform where the mobile device is open and integrated with the Internet, everyone in the mobile ecosystem will benefit.

"The Weather Channel Mobile has been a leader in the mobile space for nearly ten years and during that time we've learned what users want in a mobile experience," Mr. Gump said.
