Yahoo expands oneSearch, ad services

Yahoo Inc. has formed new oneSearch and advertising partnerships in Asia-Pacific as part of a strategy to expand its mobile presence worldwide.

The Internet giant has allied with five major wireless carriers in the region, making its oneSearch the preferred search service on their networks. Yahoo's two new strategic mobile advertising partners have already launched Yahoo oneSearch on their portals and will carry graphical advertisements that will be sold and served by Yahoo.

"Yahoo is focused on leading and enabling the global mobile ecosystem and when it comes to carrier partnerships we are enhancing the search experience for consumers on mobile phones," said Zealous Wiley, spokesman for Yahoo, Sunnyvale, CA.

"This is also providing Yahoo, mobile operators and major global brands with new opportunities to connect people to content and create new revenue streams through mobile advertising," he said.

The carriers partnering with Yahoo include Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. in India, Hong Kong CSL Ltd., Smart Communications Inc. and Digital Mobile Phlis Inc./SUN Cellular in the Philippines, and Vibo Telecom Inc. in Taiwan.

Yahoo's two new strategic mobile advertising partners are Idea Cellular Ltd. in India and Maxis Communications Bhd in Malaysia. The company already has display and advertising partnerships with AT&T, Mobile International and Vodafone UK.

"As the market develops and we produce a higher level of profitability and consumer engagement, this ecosystem approach to the market will benefit all parties involved," Mr. Wiley said.

Yahoo has also added localized versions of Yahoo Go 3.0 for India, Australia and Southeast Asia. Yahoo has also created a local language version for Indonesia and an English version of Yahoo oneSearch with voice that recognizes regional accents.

In addition, the company has launched new mobile widgets for Asia-Pacific such as Yahoo Cricket, Yahoo Answers, Yahoo Showtimes and an MTV Asia mobile widget featuring news updates and music charts.

"At Yahoo we are focused on developing mobile first experiences and providing consumers with simple, open, compelling and feature-rich applications that increase audience and engagement for mobile services," Mr. Wiley said.

"Our carrier partnerships are a very important part of our strategy," he said. "By working together, both parties can succeed and produce a higher level of profitability and deeper consumer engagement."

Yahoo Go 3.0 is an all-in-one mobile application. Consumers in Asia-Pacific can download Yahoo Go 3.0 on more than 270 compatible mobile devices by visiting http://m.yahoo.com.

Yahoo has opened up its platform to enable third-party developers to develop their own widgets, thereby giving consumers access to their favorite Internet brands.

"One of the challenges for the industry is discoverability around what's possible on mobile, and we feel the key is to develop innovative mobile experiences from the ground-up that increase audience and engagement for mobile services," Mr. Wiley said.
