Dive Brief:
- Downloads for short drama, or microdrama, apps grew 95.5% year-over-year in H1 of 2026, reaching 1.45 billion downloads and beating out overall non-gaming app growth of 16.6% during the same period, according to data from Mintegral shared with Marketing Dive.
- Active advertisers on short drama apps rose by 132% and creative output increased 151%. Emerging markets, including Southeast Asia (518 million downloads) and Latin America (355 million downloads), led global downloads for such apps. Europe, America and the Middle East accounted for 17% of downloads combined.
- Education app downloads posted the second-highest growth rate at 25.3% YoY. Utility apps were close behind with a 25% YoY increase. Of the categories measured, just one, e-commerce, experienced negative growth, posting a 4.4% YoY decrease. Social apps saw the lowest rate of growth, with downloads increasing 7.9% YoY.
Dive Insight:
As consumers spend more time with short-form, vertical video, marketers have continued to look for ways to capitalize on the trend. Brands from Marc Jacobs to Dr Pepper have taken their own approach to microdrama content, utilizing tropes such as absurd love triangles and soap-opera inspired antics. The format has proven to particularly resonate with Gen Z.
E-commerce had the largest volume of advertising creative during H1, with 13.3 million ads appearing across 12,800 apps. While microdrama had approximately 3 million pieces of creative , it had the highest creative density, or the number of ads divided by the number of activating advertising apps, at 1,887, according to Mintegral’s “H2 2026 Global Non-Gaming App Trends Report.”
Microdrama apps also had a creative density of over 1,100 in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Southeast Asia , making it the only category to achieve that level of density in three regions. The North American density was 977. For comparison, e-commerce had a creative density of 581 in Asia-Pacific, 545 in Europe and 804 in Southeast Asia.
Microdrama app FreeReals saw 195.8 million downloads, nearly 100 million more downloads than its closest competitor NetShort (98.9 million) in H1 of 2026.
The report was conducted by Mintegral, an artificial intelligence-powered advertising platform, and Insightrackr, a mobile marketing platform. It evaluates non-gaming app activity during H1 of 2026 and uses 2025 data in order to calculate YoY statistics. Its geographic scope does not include mainland China.
