Dive Brief:
- Programmers are expressing frustration with Netflix metrics as they renegotiate contract renewals.
- While Netflix has proved to be valuable partner, the programmers say they receive little to no data about viewers of their programs on Netflix.
- So far, Netflix often only provides stream starts and unique viewers, but offers no additional insight.
Dive Insight:
Netflix is a pioneer in its space so it's not surprising that it handles programmers a bit differently than they are accustomed. At the same time, it seems like everyone would benefit from Netflix finding a way to provide more transparency in viewers. As long as programmers are willing to sell without receiving more advanced metrics, Netflix may have little reason to change. If advertising becomes a stronger part of streaming services, then Netflix may be forced to open the doors on metrics a bit wider.
