Dive Insight:
Wonderful Pistachios is pushing further into the sports scene with “Don’t Hold Back All-Stars,” a social-focused campaign featuring the brand’s inaugural, seven-member NIL roster. The effort, which highlights how the snack brand fits into athletes’ routines, comes as the global better-for-you snacks category is expected to grow from $118.1 billion in 2026 to $207.5 billion by 2034, according to Fortune Business Insights.
The brand’s NIL program spans six sports and all Power Four conferences, with content slated for the fall, winter and spring seasons. Included on the roster is University of Maryland track and field athlete Quincy Wilson, Duke point guard Deron Rippey Jr., University of North Carolina women’s soccer midfielder Deus Stanislaus, University of Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis, University of Florida softball outfielder Taylor Shumaker,University of Southern California women’s basketball player Jazzy Davidson and women’s volleyball outside hitter London Wijay.
Social content pairs each of the athletes with a creative concept inspired by their sport. The creative varies from the brand’s previous work, which puts its product front-and-center, to seemingly draw from the marketing playbooks of core sports brands like Nike to offer an athlete-first visual treatment.
“For the overall look we wanted this to feel like it was coming from an authentic athletic space. It needed to feel youthful and graphic —taking inspiration for our athletes, their tastes, and their feeds,” said Bobby Pearce, chief creative officer at Wonderful Agency, in a Q&A attached to press details. “The idea started with something very familiar to sports culture, trading cards. We used that as a jumping-off point to build an entire visual world around the All-Stars.”
Wonderful Pistachios’ push around NIL content could help it forge stronger connections with both athletes and sports fans alike, while an emphasis on social media may allow for better discovery with younger, digital-first audiences like Gen Z. Sports has been a focal point for the brand, which teamed with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen last fall for a national campaign and a college scholarship.
Wonderful Pistachios’ initial “The Don’t Hold Back Snack” campaign looked to win on-the-go consumers with out-of-home ads focused on high-traffic commuter locations.
