Dive Insight:
This announcement could throw a wrench into Forrester's findings from late last year that social media marketing isn't as valuable as previously thought. According to Charise Strandberg, an AT&T Wireless Social Media Community Influencer, social media marketing on Twitter is about to get a big boost.
"For marketers, it's going to push up the number of impressions on tweets much higher," Strandberg told Marketing Dive. Still, the details on how the algorithm will work and what it will look like on Google are under wraps, it's likely that higher profile accounts will still show up near the top of relevant searches.
"This makes Twitter a much more content-oriented space, which is a good move on them because people just are not using its visual elements to the extent they could be," she said.
Twitter already has similar deals with Bing and Yahoo.
The service seems to be undergoing an overhaul to adapt to a shifting social media landscape. Just this month alone, Twitter has announced a native video option, Promoted Tweets appearing on third-party platforms, and rolling out an option that makes it easier for SMBs to buy Promoted Tweets.
