- Even with a tech-savvy marketing team, it can be easy to make some major missteps when technology is involved.
- One famous example involves a Volkswagen dealership in Illinois that erected a billboard carrying a QR code. Immediately, there was backlash in the area over the unsafe driving habits encouraged by such an ad.
- Another infamous example of technology going wrong is fast food chain McDonald's promotion of the hashtag #McDStories, which quickly became a way for Twitter users to share disgusting and negative stories about the chain.
Like with the McDonald's story, a marketing technology fail can sometimes surprise you, but a lot of mistakes can be avoided with education and diligence. Often, marketers don't consider the potential backlash of what they perceive to be a wholly positive campaign. The risk of a mistake is compounded by marketers who don't fully understand the technology they are using as well. See the full infographic below for more examples.
