Dive Brief:
- According to a report from eMarketer, Yahoo has dropped from second to fourth in terms of overall U.S. digital ad revenue share.
- The top three spots are held by Google, Facebook and Microsoft respectively.
- In August, eMarketer predicted Yahoo would hold the No. 2 spot, but that position had to be reevaluated after Yahoo failed to show significant growth despite investments in display ads and consumer products.
Dive Insight:
Yahoo has had quite the rollercoaster year with a new CEO, a controversial new logo, seemingly endless acquisitions and a slew of investments in ad products. Not everything has worked out as planned for the company, but part of the drop in ranking can be attributed to Facebook's aggressive investments in advertising this year, as well. Yahoo may also need some time for all of its investments and improvements to reach their full potential.
