Dive Insight:
The creator affiliate program from “Minecraft” comes as content marketing continues to be a crucial tool to reach young consumers. The game, which is the best-selling video game title of all time with over 350 million copies sold, already boasts a large content ecosystem, with creators such as Dream having tens of millions of subscribers. The affiliate program allows “Minecraft” to streamline its partnership process and reward those who can drive purchases within its in-game store.
Creators who are a part of the program will be able to use a unique link on the promoted content of their choice, such as a QR code in a video or a website banner. Only select items are eligible for commission, which starts at 5%, including skin and texture packs, mini-games, adventure maps and more. Persona items, subscriptions and games are not eligible for the program.
Affiliate programs have become increasingly popular as brands look to capitalize on the growth of the creator economy. Programs have been introduced by a variety of marketers across industries, including Macy’s, Adidas and Home Depot. While a strategy often employed by retailers, “Minecraft” is not the first video game to introduce a creator program. Electronic Arts, which publishes games such as “The Sims” and “Battlefield 6,” has both an affiliate program and a more general creator program.
There has been a larger push from the gaming industry to better control creator-brand partnerships. Recently, Roblox launched “Brand Link,” a collection of creator-made experiences on the platform to better streamline brand integrations.
“Minecraft” has proven to be commercially successful outside of the video game realm. “A Minecraft Movie,” which was released in 2025, has grossed over $960 million worldwide. The movie’s success was in part due to the virality of certain moments, including the “chicken jockey” scene where cinema-goers would throw popcorn in the air when a baby zombie riding a chicken would appear on screen. McDonald’s collaboration with the movie was the largest global campaign in its history, spanning 100 markets.
Microsoft had a fiscal year 2026 Q3 revenue of $82.9 billion, an 18% increase year-over-year, per a press release.
